Q&A With Luis Servin Madrigal, Architectural Designer
Q&A with LUIS SERVIN MADRIGAL
Professional Journey
What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?
Luis: From a young age my thoughts and emotions were affected by the design world. Being within a well-designed space/structure evoked many emotions. I knew then that I wanted to be part of the design industry that made that possible.
Design Philosophy and Work
How would you describe your design approach or philosophy?
Luis: Due to my experience at a young age I always sought to make designs as if I was designing for myself. I find myself wanting to create spaces and structures that evoke emotional responses through well thought out use of space volumes, lighting and materials.
Which designer(s) do you most admire and/or have influenced your work the most?
Luis: Some designers whom I am influenced by are Tadao Ando and Luis Barragan. I truly appreciate how both designers welcome and celebrate emotions within their work. creating serene and contemplative spaces. Ando’s minimalist approach focuses on the interplay of light and shadow, creating spaces that encourage interaction, reflection, and emotional connection. And Barragan’s use of vibrant colors, light and water creating spaces with emotion and sensory richness.
Company Culture and Team
What do you enjoy most about working at Syndicate Smith?
Luis: I enjoy our monthly office events, and the 1 on 1’s we have with either Todd or Steven. But most of all I enjoy being surrounded by well-minded individuals. Ever since I started my journey here, the office has always felt like a second home due to the warm welcoming environment that every single one of my coworkers has offered. I feel lucky to have found a place like Syndicate Smith.
Which of our core values resonates most with you at this time and why?
Luis: I believe that in this stage of my life, I best resonate with ‘Connect, Listen and Understand’. As I am in the early stages of my career, I am eager to establish meaningful connections with colleagues attentively listening to their experiences to gain a deeper understanding of their perspectives. I am grateful to be in a collaborative environment where I can regularly seek feedback, continuously improving my communication and design processes.
Personal Insights
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of architecture and design?
Luis: A couple of my hobbies I’ve picked up over the years have been the modification of vehicles. I enjoy working on cars, from small D.I.Y mechanical work to changing the complete look of a car/truck. I find enjoyment in the transformations that I can make happen on my own. Being able to see a small/big vision come to life is always so rewarding.
What is your dream travel destination, especially in terms of architectural wonders?
Luis: A dream travel destination for me would be Japan, I would love to see Tadao Ando’s work in person. To not only appreciate the architecture but also to experience the profound connection with space, culture, and nature that his designs offer.
Can you share a fun or interesting fact that people might not know about you?
Luis: A fun fact about me is that in my 28 years of life, I’ve only broken one bone-- my big toe on my right foot during middle school P.E. class. This injury ultimately led me to become an ambidextrous player in the field, making me more versatile on the soccer field in the following seasons.
